Salam Alaykom!
It has been quite some time since my last post and once again, I am spurred to blog when I should ideally be doing something entirely different (the second of my exams are tomorrow.. eek!)
I was looking at the nature of desire and how Shakespeare presents it in his works and came across something that the character of Macbeth says.. and it really had me stop and think for a second.
"Out, out, brief candle.
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor playerThat struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing."
(5.5.16-27)
This, as mentioned is said by Macbeth when he receives the news of his wife's suicide. Here he muses on how brief life is, being but a 'brief candle' and that it may be extinguished at any point. And certainly, this is true. How many times have we woken to hear news of cities being burned to ground, to women and children being untimely ripped from this world? I know I'm sounding a little sadistic but in effect, this is a reality that we all choose to look over.. me being one of the first that do so.
Alot of people prefer to prioritize things that have no meaning in this life, or (for those who believe in the afterlife) the afterlife. I myself have been preoccupied with things that, when I reflect on them, shudder at the time and money wasted. Of course, I am by no means gunning down the simple pleasures of life and encourage myself and others to keep doing so, but with in moderation.. because sadly, only when all else fails do we look to things that matter.
Though I have digressed slightly.. DESIRE! To further my rambling musings on the topic, Macbeth, in my opinion, is not forced to act upon his desires. Sure he is influenced greatly by the witches prophecies and his wife's pressurizing but effectively, no one pushes him to act upon his desires and brings forth his own eventual downfall.
On a lighter note, what would you desire to have.. if there was one desire that could be fulfilled without having to consider the consequences.. what is it? Personally, at times I desire nothing more or less than anonymity.. quite ironic since this is a public way to speak out but all the same, there are times where I would like to simply go out without being recognized, judged or questioned on my actions or thoughts.
Food for thought..
Time to hit the books again! Good luck to me and all those reading this :P
